Sexual Expression in Continuing Care Homes
Sexual expression can have physical, mental, and emotional benefits for continuing care
residents. However, it is a topic that is often overlooked and people are not always prepared to
talk about it. In this self-directed asynchronous course, we will cover some fundamentals about
this topic, including communication, privacy, cognitive capacity, ethics, and more.
We will discuss what sexual expression looks like for residents in continuing care homes, address
common misconceptions, and explore challenges and opportunities faced by residents, care staff,
and families. Through understanding multiple perspectives, we can approach sexual expression
in ways that better uphold resident’s rights and dignity, respect staff’s needs and safety, and
enable all carers to better anticipate and respond to resident sexual expression.
